Sonatas for
the Piano,Number 1, opus 28 and
Recorded in 1998 "A WHIRLWIND OF VIRTUOSITY.....The intelligence of Kasman resides in his ability to instill enthusiasm and dynamism into these pages thanks to his prodigious technique, without sacrificing the moments of great poetry, such as Lento from the Sonata Number 1, certainly one of the most inspired works of Rachamaninoff: his playing reveals the delicate overlapping of singing voices in this movement, as well as underlining its nocturnal atmosphere. The choice of the original version of the Sonata Number 2, despite the abundance of passages of pure virtuosity, emphasizes the exceptional endurance of the performer. He manages to reconcile the symphonic dimension with the legibility of the work by bringing to light the different structural themes which run through the work. In the extreme movements, his unbridled agility, close to improvisation, and his ability to modulate the dynamic range of styles give birth to a resonant universe of wonderful richness. No trace can be found to a supposedly romantic halo in his playing, which retains all of its clarity, even in the passages of unbridled velocity. A magnificent record, which sits at the height of discography next to Vladimir Horowitz (RCA)."
